The library is an integral part of Navadha School, located in Kalagacchia, a coastal village in Purba Medinipore, West Bengal. The community relies primarily on seasonal fishing-related activities for livelihood. Insufficient infrastructure such as roads and water, and limited alternative job opportunities compel villagers to migrate to nearby towns for work during non-fishing seasons. This migration directly impacts the education of children, particularly girls, leading to significant educational challenges.
The village, home to approximately 110 families, witnessed the establishment of a school for the first time through our initiative. We actively encourage children from neighboring villages to enroll in Navadha School. Since its inception in 2020 with an initial enrollment of 45 children, the pre-primary section now comprises 120 students, most of whom are first-generation learners. Navadha School is an inclusive institution that accommodates children with special needs, and the school’s library reflects this inclusivity by being open to all.
Our goal is to spark a transformation in these surrounding communities by providing access to books, promoting a culture of reading, fostering universal awareness, and enhancing overall education.
